My article "Secrets of Successful Mismatched Bridesmaids" was and still is one of Belle readers favorite articles. So, I decided to give it a little make-over... same secrets, just a few new examples and inspirations! So here is an updated mini-guide on how to let your girls wear different dresses yet still look like your team… your bridal party. Don't fail to visit Part 1 of "Secrets of Successful Mismatched Bridesmaids" to get the comprehensive guide.
Option No. 1: Same color, different shades.
Neutrals,
including grey, are so hot, especially when it comes to
bridesmaid dresses. Neutrals give mismatched dresses a more unified look
than any other color. Try them all in a short length like the first 3 images (source) to give you, the bride, a more distinctive look. Long nude dresses (pic no.5) are the best choice for a black-tie event. Or for a more edgy approach mix long and short dresses like image #6.
For those brides who want their bridesmaids to match their wedding colors, the seventh image gives you the perfect example on how to do it in a radiant color. Same length and same bouquet are the elements this bride used to bring together her bridal party look. Almost the same case apply to the last photo... this one... this one is just pure mismatched beauty.

Option No. 2: Different colors, same style.
Some brides would like to follow the mismatched bridesmaids trend, but they still would like to
choose their bridesmaids’ dresses. Option number 2 is for them.
Picking the exact same dress in the different tones of your wedding color
palette looks amazing and gives your bridal party a refreshing pop of color (photo no.1). If you only have a couple of colors in your wedding color palette, check out pic #2, I personally love this one. You may also choose two or three different styles and colors and
let your bridesmaids determine what fits them best, like the last two brides. (photo #4, photo#5)
Option No. 3: Same color, different style.
Give your bridesmaids the exact color or even the fabric you would like
them to wear and let them came up with their own dress. Or you can personally choose a few variations of the same dress (image 1, image 2, image 3, image 4, image 5, image 6).
Option No.4: Same dress, mismatched accessories.Head to the original post "Secrets of Successful Mismatched Bridesmaids" to see what this is all about.
Option No. 5: Free Style
If you feel like your girls have a great sense of style give them the
freedom to wear what they have on their closets. You can always provide
some guidance about your wedding theme or colors to keep the look together.

What fun ideas, brides have become so creative. I think my favorite has to be the same color different shades.
ReplyDeleteYou could also specify a color (or color group), a style, a cut, and a set of accessories and specify that three of the four must be present.
ReplyDeleteI went to Home Depot and got paint swatches of my color palette - peaches, light pinks, etc. and sent them with little invitation gifts to my bridesmaids. :)
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing! Gave each girl a stack of the color swatches and told them to pick a green, knee length dress of any style they liked. :D
DeleteThanks so much for sharing, i love it! hey question, if you have like 8 bridesmaids do they all need to stand next to you? sounds like a lot of people, but im debating who to choose coz i have like 8 really close friends :S
ReplyDeleteI think all of your bridesmaids should stand next to you. Some of these brides had 7 or 8 bridesmaids, and they have them all standing up next to her. Take for example the first image from option no.5, that's a picture of the actual ceremony and the bridesmaids were all line up next to the bride.
DeleteI recently featured a wedding with 10 bridesmaids (here is the link: http://www.bellethemagazine.com/2012/02/rustic-chic-barn-wedding.html), even though you cant see the bridesmaids at the ceremony on the images I posted, they were all standing next to the bride.
But, this is only my opinion. The ultimate decision is yours.... do what makes you feel comfortable. It is your big day!
trying to figure out where the photo at the very top of this article is from--i am, without question, going the route of mismatched bridesmaids, and i LOVE the dresses shown there so it'd be great to be able to find out where the dresses are from/what brand they are/etc!
ReplyDeletethanks so much!!
I do too! Let me know if you find out anything about the dresses from the first picture.
DeleteWould you happen to know where I can find this dress? Or similar ones?

yes please--where are the brides finding these BM dresses?? I am having a HARD time find similar ones that I like
ReplyDeleteWhat about accessories for the girls in same color different styles? My maid of honor and I were thinking matching bracelets for the girls to add a little cohesion... What do you all think?
ReplyDeletelet me get this straight...having mismatched bridesmaids is a trend, and therefore you can purchase the "mismatched look" as a set? I had my girls wear mismatched dresses so they didn't have to pay an arm and a leg and could get a dress they'd actually want to wear again. People are funny...
ReplyDeletegreat ideas and really beautiful dresses in many of the photos. I would however recommend that some of them find out what an iron is and how to use it. Apart form that, love it.
ReplyDeleteI was looking into the same color different shades and same fabric. Do they all need to get the dress from the same place so the fabric is exactly the same or would it look weird if I let them pick their own?
ReplyDeleteI have 4 bridesmaids. I gave them the options of all selecting different dresses or picking the same and we couldn't come to a solution that way. So do you think it's weird if my MOH wears one dress, my sister wears another, and then my 2 other bridesmaids wear the same dress? So when they're standing next to each other during the ceremony, it will go MOH w/ unique dress, sister w/ unique dress, and then 2 other bridesmaids with same dress. Is that weird? I can't seem to make them all happy.
ReplyDeleteunmatching bridesmaid dress is so cool. it gives bridesmaids choices to pick a dress they like and within their budget. that is a great wedding ideas
